What Are the Health Advantages of Organic Food

The debate goes on whether organic food, that is food that is  organically developed is worth the extra cost.  Either side has some good arguments.  Since our only concern is to find the most healthy foods at a good value, we will take an objective view.  By the end of the article you might not alter your point of view, but hopefully will have a better appreciation for both sides.


First, we’ll have a quick comparison of the two.  Conventional farming will apply fertilizers that are chemical, spray pesticides for disease and pest control, employ herbicides to manage weeds, and provide animals antibiotics and growth hormones.  In contrast, organic farming applies to natural fertilizers such as manure or compost, use traps or birds for pest control, hand till for weed management, and feed animals with organic materials.

Who Decides what Is Organic

In the United States, the Department of Agriculture decides whether products will be deemed organic or not.  These government standards regulate the processes organic foods must use for growing, harvesting and processing.  Products that are totally organic are labeled “100% organic” and carry the USDA seal.  The label “organic” may be used with products which have more than one ingredient if they total a minimum of 95% organic.  Whenever you see a label that says “made with organic ingredients”, this product has to contain a minimum of 70% organic.  If it states “natural”, that isn’t the same as “organic”.

So to get to our question at hand: is organic our healthier choice.  Unfortunately after all this time we still don’t have a scientific answer.  Researchers comparing the two find the nutritional content to be similar, so from that standpoint it doesn’t appear to make much difference.

The Reasons why People Buy Organic Food

The reasons why many people buy organic foods will fall into three broad categories:

1.    The environment.  Organic farming will help to safeguard our ecosystem.  Contaminants have a major impact on our an overall health, and that will affect we breathe and the toxins we take in with the food we eat.  They also can cause issues with the liver and other organs.  These are issues that all of us should be aware of, which will make for a safer and more healthy environment.

2.    Pesticides.  When farmers spray pesticides, residue stay on the product.  By purchasing organic you are able to limit your exposure to much of these dangerous residues, since organic food is tested to have less pesticide residue.  Much of the concern may be alleviated by completely washing all produce, and residue on both organic and non organic product can not exceed government safety thresholds anyway.

3.     Food additives.  As organic regulations forbid or severely confine fortifying agents and food additives commonly utilized in traditional foods, this can be the strongest case for choosing organic product.  These additives have been linked to liver and gall bladder issues.

Organic foods typically cost more and since they will be untreated frequently spoil more rapidly as opposed to non organic product.  Maybe the most effective method to use would be to always completely wash your produce, and peel whenever you can. By selecting from a variety of food sources, both organic and non organic, you may diminish your chance of exposure to any pesticide.  Check out information on organic foods to find which are are more susceptible to pesticides and other contaminants.  Mushrooms, for example are prone to pick up contaminants in the soil, and it is recommended that any mushrooms consumed should be organically grown.
